"On Stranger Tides" Laps Up $800 Million In 3 Weeks

Disney's blockbuster 3D adventure, "Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides", with it's great 'mermaid' sequence, backed by the moody orchestrations of composer Hans Zimmer, has taken over $614.9 million overseas, bringing the film's worldwide gross past $800 million...in less than 3 weeks.

Released May 20, 2011 in North America, the fourth installment in the "Pirates of the Caribbean series", stars Johnny Depp as 'Captain Jack Sparrow', Penélope Cruz as 'Angelica', Geoffrey Rush as 'Captain Hector Barbossa' and Ian McShane as 'Blackbeard'.

"On Stranger Tides" is directed by Rob Marshall from a screenplay by Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio.

The plot of the film draws 'inspiration' from the novel "On Stranger Tides", by author Tim Powers :

"...'Captain Jack Sparrow' (Depp) finds himself on an unexpected journey to the fabled 'Fountain of Youth' when a woman from his past (Cruz) forces him aboard the 'Queen Anne’s Revenge', the ship of the formidable pirate 'Blackbeard' (McShane)..."
