Writer/director James Mangold's "Logan", starring Hugh Jackman as the 'adamantium'-clawed 'Wolverine', has been nominated for an Oscar in the category 'Best Adapted Screenplay'. But what Marvel Comics story does the "Logan" screenplay actually adapt ?
"Logan" loosely adapts writer Mark Millar's "Old Man Logan" (2009)...
...then borrows the character of his daughter 'Laura Kinney' aka 'X-23', from the "X-Men: Evolution" TV series...
...followed by a series of comic books.
"...in 'Old Man Logan', the main character is an aged 'Wolverine' set in an alternate future universe designated 'Earth-807128', where 'supervillains' overthrew the 'superheroes'.
"After the 'Death of Wolverine', 'X-23' took the mantle of Wolverine..."
"...'X-23' is the 'cloned' daughter of 'Wolverine', created to be the perfect killing machine.
"For years, she proved herself a capable assassin working for an organization called the 'Facility'.
"But a series of tragedies eventually led her to Wolverine and the 'X-Men'.
"Like Wolverine, X-23 has a regenerative healing factor and enhanced senses, speed and reflexes. She also has retractable 'adamantium'-coated bone claws in her hands and feet..."
"In terms of narratives", said Oscar nominee Mangold, "we were actually taking more from the 'X-23' series of comics than we were from 'Old Man Logan'."
