Marvel Comics' new "Eternals" title written by Kieron Gillan and illustrated by Esad Ribic, in support of Marvel Studios' upcoming live-action "Eternals" feature starring Angelia Jolie, launches January 2021:
"...for millions of years, one hundred 'Eternals' have roamed the Earth, as the secret protectors of humanity.
Without them, we'd be smears between the teeth of the demon-like 'Deviants'.
"Their war has waged for all time, echoing in our myths and nightmares. But today, Eternals face something new: change. Can they — or anyone — survive their discovery?..."
"'Eternal' doesn’t mean immortal," said Gillon. "'Eternal' means unchanging. That's a different thing. There can be something comforting about the Eternals, but there's also something fundamentally disturbing to it.
"The old superhero cliché of 'The Never-ending battle against crime' is one of those lines which, if you take it out of context for a second and think about it, seems absolutely 'Sisyphean' in its hopelessness. Yet, to lift a line from Camus, we must imagine Sisyphus happy – the Eternals have been doing this for so long, they must be accepting of it? Right?
"Clearly not. The Eternals have been having arguments about what it means to be 'unchanging' forever. They must remain, and their cellular programming demand they remain and continue. But it causes all manner of tensions. This ties in with the present situation in the 'Marvel Universe'..."
"Following the events of 'Avengers: Endgame', an unexpected tragedy forces them out of the shadows to reunite against mankind's most ancient enemy, 'The Deviants'.
"The outstanding ensemble cast includes Richard Madden as the all-powerful 'Ikaris'...
"...Gemma Chan as humankind-loving 'Sersi', Kumail Nanjiani as the cosmic-powered 'Kingo,' Lauren Ridloff as the super-fast 'Makkari'...
...Brian Tyree Henry as the intelligent inventor 'Phastos', Salma Hayak as the wise and spiritual leader 'Ajak', Lia McHugh as 'Sprite', Don Lee as the powerful 'Gilgamesh' and Barry Keoghan as 'Druig'..."
Written and illustrated by "Captain America" co-creator Jack 'King' Kirby in 1976, Marvel Comics' 19-issue "The Eternals" series...
...focused on an offshoot of the evolutionary process responsible for sentient life on Earth...".
